About Me
Dr. Oleg Alekseev is a board-certified ophthalmologist and retinal specialist at Duke Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina. He focuses his clinical practice on inherited retinal degenerations, including conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa, Stargardt disease, macular pattern dystrophies, and syndromic retinal degenerations. He also evaluates and manages mimickers of these conditions, such as autoimmune and iatrogenic retinopathies. Patients have access to advanced diagnostic testing, including electrophysiology, perimetry, specialized retinal imaging, and genetic testing.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Alekseev is a dedicated researcher who holds a K08 career development award. His laboratory research focuses on developing gene-agnostic therapies to prolong the health of photoreceptors in diseases like retinitis pigmentosa, with the goal of preserving vision. He investigates both gene therapy and small-molecule-based approaches to treatment.
