About Me

Dr. Michael Engelbert is a vitreoretinal surgeon and macular disease specialist who provides both medical and surgical care for complex retinal conditions. He manages age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease medically, and performs surgical repair of macular disease and retinal detachments, including those resulting from diabetes, trauma, or prior unsuccessful surgery. He also specializes in secondary intraocular lens implantation following complicated cataract surgery and is an internationally recognized expert on vitreous anatomy and vitreoretinal interface disorders.

Dr. Engelbert received his medical degree from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and completed his ophthalmology residency at Columbia University. He further subspecialized with a vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital and Columbia University. He is a Research Assistant Professor at New York University, where he instructs residents and fellows and provides surgical care for an underserved population with advanced retinal disease.
