About Me
Dr. Mark R. Barakat is a board-certified ophthalmologist and retina specialist who founded the Retina Macula Institute of Arizona in 2023. He focuses on the medical and surgical treatment of retinal conditions, bringing extensive clinical research experience to his practice. Dr. Barakat is dedicated to providing advanced retinal care, incorporating the latest research and treatment options for his patients.
Dr. Barakat completed a two-year fellowship in medical and surgical retina at the Cleveland Clinic's Cole Eye Institute after serving as chief resident during his ophthalmology residency at Hahnemann University. His background includes developing imaging modules for retinal photo analysis, which informs his approach to diagnosis and treatment. He has published and presented retina research at national meetings, ranging from basic science to clinical applications.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Barakat serves as Director of Research at Retina Macula Institute of Arizona and Medical Director of Spectra Eye Institute. He holds a faculty appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix and is a fellow of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
