About Me
Dr. Mark Fernandez is an ophthalmic surgeon who specializes in corneal, cataract, and refractive surgery. He provides comprehensive eye care, including the diagnosis and management of corneal disease, complex cataract surgery, and laser vision correction. His expertise in corneal transplantation includes both full thickness and partial thickness techniques, such as Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) and Descemet's Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK).
Dr. Fernandez began practicing in Norfolk in 2012 and has been recognized as a Hampton Roads “Top Doc” in Ophthalmology. He is known for being the first surgeon in the region to perform DMEK and to implant the Boston Keratoprosthesis, an artificial cornea for patients at high risk of rejecting traditional transplants. His clinical interests also extend to the treatment of dry eye, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Fernandez is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He has contributed to the medical literature with numerous publications and has received the Robert Machemer Research award for his work in limbal epithelial cell transplantation.
