About Me
Dr. Mariam Mathai is a vitreoretinal surgeon with The Retina Group of Washington who provides medical and surgical care for a wide range of retinal diseases. She offers the latest, research-backed techniques in the clinic and operating room, including modern vitrectomy approaches, and is committed to clear communication and compassionate, patient-centered decisions. Her interests include teaching and clinical research, with presentations at national meetings and publications in leading ophthalmology journals.
Dr. Mathai graduated summa cum laude from Washington University in St. Louis, earned her medical degree at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and completed an internal medicine internship at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. She served as chief resident during her ophthalmology residency at MedStar Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center and then completed a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery through Georgetown University Hospital, Washington Hospital Center, and The Retina Group of Washington.
