About Me
Ji Liu, MD, MS, is an ophthalmologist who specializes in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma, routine and complex cataract surgery, and anterior segment surgery. He was drawn to medicine to understand how and why people get sick and to manage illness. In medical school, he realized the importance of vision, noting that ninety percent of what we learn from the outside world comes from our eyes, and he finds advances in technology for treating eye diseases fascinating.
For example, with cataract surgery, intraocular lens implantation can correct not just the cataract but astigmatism, and newer intraocular lens technology may help patients see well at both near and far distances without glasses. For glaucoma, there is no cure, but there are many treatments, including modern laser and microinvasive procedures. Dr. Liu finds the best parts of his job are helping patients see and improving their quality of life. He enjoys both routine and complex surgeries, such as cataract surgery, dislocated lens repair, iris repair, and glaucoma procedures with new technologies. When meeting a new patient, he takes time to understand their concerns and medical history, and also asks about their support system at home, especially for those with low vision.
Dr. Liu’s research focuses on intraocular pressure monitoring, a major risk factor for glaucoma, and also involves laser and surgical treatment of glaucoma. He believes research is key to improving patient care and treatment outcomes.
