About Me
Dr. Douglas Rhee is a board-certified ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist who serves as Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Director of the UH Eye Institute. He cares for both adult and childhood glaucomas, including complex and high-risk cases, rare clinical syndromes, and more common forms of the disease. Dr. Rhee is recognized as an early pioneer in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) and was among the first surgeons worldwide to perform the Trabectome procedure, which laid the foundation for the MIGS era.
Dr. Rhee offers a comprehensive range of surgical options, from traditional trabeculectomy to deep sclerectomy and numerous advanced implant devices. He has contributed to the understanding of conditions such as plateau iris syndrome and medication-induced glaucoma, and his clinical research focuses on outcomes of both traditional and novel surgical techniques. Patients under his care benefit from his extensive experience with FDA-approved devices and clinical trials, and he sees patients at multiple UH Eye Institute locations throughout Northeast Ohio.
