About Me
Dr. Douglas Witherspoon is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, with a career dedicated to vitreoretinal surgery and ocular trauma. He has been a member of the UAB faculty since 1982 and played a key role in establishing the department as a leader in eye injury care. Dr. Witherspoon directs the Vitreoretinal Fellowship Training Program and co-founded the United States Eye Injury Registry, reflecting his commitment to advancing the field.
His clinical expertise focuses on the surgical management of complex retinal conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachments, as well as treating severe eye injuries from trauma or sports. Dr. Witherspoon is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and has received honors from the American Society of Retina Specialists and the American Academy of Ophthalmology for his contributions.
