Meet Dr. Carol Shields
About Me
Dr. Carol L. Shields is Chief of the Ocular Oncology Service at Wills Eye Hospital and a Professor of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. She specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of eye tumors, including uveal melanoma, retinoblastoma, and other intraocular, orbital, and conjunctival tumors. Each year, the Oncology Service manages approximately 500 patients with uveal melanoma and 120 with retinoblastoma, along with numerous other tumor types from the United States and abroad.
Dr. Shields completed her ophthalmology training at Wills Eye Hospital and pursued fellowship training in ocular oncology, oculoplastic surgery, and ophthalmic pathology. She has contributed extensively to the field through her research, with over 1,400 articles and 12 textbooks, and serves on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals. Her work has earned her numerous honors, including the Donders Award and the American Academy of Ophthalmology Life Achievement Honor Award.
