Dr. Brinda Muthusamy

Miss Brinda Muthusamy is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a distinguished career specializing in paediatric and neuro-ophthalmology. She received her medical degree from the University of Edinburgh and trained in accident and emergency followed by general medicine at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, obtaining membership to the Royal College of Physicians. Her higher surgical training in ophthalmology was completed at the Bristol Eye Hospital, and she is a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

She furthered her expertise with clinical fellowships at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA, completing one in paediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus, followed by another in neuro-ophthalmology. She was appointed to her current consultant post at Addenbrookes Hospital in 2013, a tertiary referral centre for neurology, neuro-oncology, and neurosurgery, where she cares for adults and children with conditions involving the visual system.

Her surgical practice includes paediatric squint surgery performed through a small keyhole incision, excision of lesions on the lid and brow, and cataract surgery in children over three years old. She also treats adult squints with adjustable surgery for predictable outcomes and has been performing adult cataract surgery since 2003, routinely using micro-incisional, phacoemulsification techniques with intraocular lens implantation. In her NHS role, she teaches cataract surgery to trainee ophthalmologists and serves as the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Clinical Tutor at Addenbrookes Hospital, overseeing the educational needs of doctors in training.
