About Me
Benjamin Smith, M.D. is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who recently joined the Tucson community and is working with Hodges Eye Care & Surgical Center. He is dedicated to delivering the best techniques with the latest technologies to provide excellent eye care for his patients.
Dr. Smith grew up in Albuquerque and earned his bachelor’s degree in Physics from Brigham Young University before receiving his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. He completed his internship at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia, and his ophthalmology residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Serving in the Army since 1998, Retired Colonel Smith has extensive experience, including 10 years teaching cataract and refractive surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and trauma to young ophthalmologists.
He has deployed twice to Baghdad as a trauma ophthalmologist, collaborated in Morocco, and served on multiple humanitarian medical missions to countries such as Honduras, El Salvador, Zanzibar, Peru, Burkina Faso, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. Dr. Smith and his wife Stephanie have six children and one grandchild, and they enjoy hiking and the outdoors. He looks forward to contributing to the medical community and serving the people of Tucson.
