She earned her medical degree from Georgetown University Medical School, where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. She then completed an ophthalmology residency and a fellowship in Corneal and External Disease at Tufts New England Eye Center and Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. After practicing at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston, she returned to her home state of Arizona in 2002.
Dr. McColgin is a clinical instructor at the University of Arizona, teaching ophthalmology residents about corneal disease. She was among the first surgeons in the United States to perform endothelial transplants, a breakthrough in corneal transplant surgery. Her research contributions include authoring multiple articles in major ophthalmic journals, writing textbook chapters, and serving as an investigator for the Corneal Donor Study.
Board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Dr. McColgin has been recognized with the Janet M. Glasgow Award and the Lorenz Zimmerman, MD Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology. She has been elected by her peers as one of the Best Doctors in America annually since 2006.
