About Me
Dr. Thomas J. Avallone is a board-certified ophthalmologist, decorated Navy veteran, and the founder and medical director of Island Eye Specialists in Coronado. He provides comprehensive surgical care with special expertise in cataract, glaucoma, anterior segment, and refractive surgery, and has successfully performed thousands of procedures, including many complex cases. Dr. Avallone earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, completed internship and ophthalmology residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego, and pursued fellowship training in glaucoma at UCLA’s renowned Stein Eye Institute.During his military service, Dr. Avallone led the Department of Ophthalmology & Refractive Surgery at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton and participated in humanitarian missions abroad, including a deployment to Vietnam where his team performed more than 200 cataract surgeries. An assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Uniformed Services University and active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society, he stays current with advances while keeping care personal and approachable.
