About Me
Dr. Thomas Avallone is a board-certified ophthalmologist, decorated Navy veteran, and the founder of Island Eye Specialists. Known for his surgical precision and calm demeanor, he specializes in cataract, glaucoma, anterior segment and refractive surgery, having successfully performed thousands of procedures including complex cases.
After earning his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, he completed his internship and ophthalmology residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego, followed by a glaucoma fellowship at UCLA’s renowned Stein Eye Institute. This extensive training equips him to manage a wide range of eye conditions with confidence and care.
During his military career, he led the Department of Ophthalmology & Refractive Surgery at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton and participated in humanitarian missions, such as deploying to Vietnam where his team performed over 200 cataract surgeries. He continues to serve the Coronado community with a focus on honor, service, and excellence. As an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Uniformed Services University and an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society, he stays at the forefront of the field while prioritizing clear vision and respectful patient care.
