Dr. Michael Gilhooley

Dr. Shannon J. Beres is a neuro-ophthalmology specialist who cares for children and families at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health. She brings the perspective of a child neurologist to eye and vision problems that involve the brain, offering careful evaluation and clear explanations so parents and patients understand what’s happening and why. Dr. Beres describes her style as family-centered and team-oriented—she spends extra time teaching, answering questions, and partnering on a plan that fits each child’s needs. Her clinical interests span conditions that affect the optic nerve and eye movements, as well as neurologic disorders with visual symptoms. She collaborates closely with pediatric ophthalmology, neurology, oncology, and neurosurgery when multidisciplinary care is needed. Dr. Beres completed medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University, residency in child neurology at UCSF, and fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania. She is board-certified in neurology with special qualification in child neurology. Families appreciate her energy, advocacy, and commitment to seeing them through every step of diagnosis and treatment.

Benjamin Ghiam, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist with specialty training in neuro-ophthalmology and expertise in strabismus surgery. He evaluates and treats complex vision problems that involve the optic nerve, brain and eye-movement pathways, including double vision and disorders that cause visual field loss or eyelid dysfunction. Dr. Ghiam’s approach is thorough and collaborative: he takes time to review medical history, explain findings in plain language, and build individualized plans that may include observation, medication, prisms, surgery or coordination with neurology and primary care. A California native, Dr. Ghiam completed internal medicine training at UCLA Olive View, ophthalmology residency at University Hospitals Case Western Reserve (where he served as chief resident), and a fellowship in pediatric and adult neuro-ophthalmology and strabismus at the USC Roski Eye Institute/LA General/Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He earned his medical degree from the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and completed undergraduate studies at UC Santa Barbara.

Dr. Eman Hawy is a neuro-ophthalmologist at Loma Linda University Health who cares for patients with complex vision symptoms that overlap eye and brain conditions. She evaluates visual loss, double vision, eyelid and orbital problems, and neurologic disorders that affect the eyes. Dr. Hawy offers both medical and surgical treatments and enjoys helping patients understand the root cause of their symptoms and what to expect from care. She speaks English and Arabic and sees patients at Loma Linda University Faculty Medical Clinics and the Riverwalk Clinics in Riverside. Her training spans ophthalmology, neurology, and neuro-ophthalmology, including residency in neurology and additional glaucoma research fellowships. Patients see her for conditions such as thyroid eye disease, optic nerve swelling, and myasthenia gravis, as well as eyelid malpositions and lacrimal (tear-duct) disorders. Treatments she provides include eyelid surgery, ptosis repair, and Botox for blepharospasm. Dr. Hawy’s goal is to deliver thoughtful, whole-person care that restores comfort, function, and confidence so people can return to the activities that matter most.
