About Me
Dr. Michael Goldbaum is a board-certified ophthalmologist and Professor of Ophthalmology in Residence at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where he serves as Co-Director of the Retina Division at the Shiley Eye Institute. He has been teaching and practicing at UC San Diego since 1977. Dr. Goldbaum completed his medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine and a master's in medical informatics at Stanford University. He then undertook an ophthalmology residency at Tulane and the U.S. Naval Hospital, followed by a vitreoretinal fellowship at Cornell University Medical Center and New York Hospital.
His clinical expertise encompasses the medical and surgical management of retinal and vitreous conditions, including macular degeneration, pediatric retinal diseases, and ocular tumors. Dr. Goldbaum is an expert in ocular oncology and vitreoretinal surgery. He is also a leader in ophthalmology informatics, integrating data science into eye care research and practice.
Internationally recognized, Dr. Goldbaum has served as a visiting professor at universities in China, Paraguay, Italy, Ukraine, and at Stanford and Columbia in the United States. His research interests include advancing treatments for retinal diseases and ocular tumors, and he continues to contribute to the field through his clinical work and academic leadership.
