About Me

Dr. Maxwell Stem is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in vitreoretinal surgery. He was the valedictorian of his high school class and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Juniata College with a degree in biology. As a medical student at Penn State University, he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and received the Exemplary Medical Student Award for his contributions to research, clinical medicine, community service, and leadership.

He performed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Michigan W. K. Kellogg Eye Center, where he was awarded the LaBerge award for excellence in research and the Paul R. Lichter Resident Mentor Award for his leadership and dedication to teaching. Dr. Stem completed his two-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Associated Retinal Consultants/William Beaumont Hospital, during which he received the Retina Fellows’ Forum Research Award for his work on sutureless intrascleral intraocular lens implantation. He then served as an attending vitreoretinal surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital before moving back to central Pennsylvania.

Dr. Stem is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Medical Association. He has authored numerous scientific publications and textbook chapters on vitreoretinal diseases and has been an invited speaker to present scientific papers and abstracts at national ophthalmic meetings. He is thrilled to be living and working in central Pennsylvania again and for the opportunity to deliver world-class retina care to patients in the region.
