About Me
Dr. Kanwal K. Nischal is a professor of ophthalmology and the chief of the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. He also serves as the Director of Pediatric Program Development at the UPMC Eye Center and the Medical Director of Telemedicine Services at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Dr. Nischal is internationally recognized as a pioneer in pediatric corneal transplants, and children from around the world seek his expertise for genetic corneal diseases.
He completed his medical education at King’s College Hospital Medical School of the University of London, followed by ophthalmology residencies at Birmingham and Midlands and the Oxford Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom. He then undertook a pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Before joining Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in 2011, he practiced at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London.
Dr. Nischal’s clinical research focuses on anterior segment developmental anomalies affecting the cornea, lens, and trabecular meshwork. He has published extensively on pediatric cataract, glaucoma, and cornea, as well as craniofacial anomalies. He is the founder and co-director of the World Society of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Pediatric Glaucoma and Cataract Family Association.
