About Me

Dr. Joung (John) Y. Kim is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in corneal and external eye diseases, cataract surgery, and refractive surgery. He serves as an Assistant Professor at the Emory Eye Center, where he has been on faculty since 1998. Dr. Kim's clinical expertise includes the management of complex corneal conditions, advanced cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, and laser refractive procedures such as LASIK. He began performing laser refractive surgery in 2000 and is actively involved in clinical research, including studies on keratoconus and innovative treatments like the implantable miniature telescope.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Kim is committed to medical education and patient safety. He serves on the Ophthalmic Device Committee of the FDA and has held leadership roles with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, including the Refractive Management/Intervention Self-Assessment team. He frequently lectures at national meetings and has authored a book chapter on infections following LASIK. Dr. Kim also volunteers his time with ORBIS, an international flying eye hospital, providing surgical care in underserved regions.

Patients can expect a thorough, compassionate approach from Dr. Kim, who is known for explaining conditions and treatment options clearly. He is fluent in English and offers telehealth visits for convenient consultations. His practice is part of the Emory Healthcare network, providing access to a full spectrum of eye care services.
