Dr. James Rains

Dr. James C. Rains Jr., known as Dr. Jim Rains, is an experienced ophthalmologist who has been providing eye care in Bessemer, Alabama for over four decades. He completed his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1970 and then served a one-year internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Dr. Rains initially practiced family medicine in Bessemer for two years before pursuing specialized training in ophthalmology at UAB Callahan Eye Hospital, where he completed his residency in 1976. His background in family medicine gives him a holistic perspective, understanding how eye health fits into overall patient well-being.

Dr. Rains opened his general ophthalmology practice in Bessemer in 1976 and continues to serve the community there. He is committed to providing comprehensive eye care, focusing on the individual needs of each patient. His long-standing presence in the area has allowed him to build lasting relationships with multiple generations of families. Outside of his practice, Dr. Rains enjoys spending time with his wife of 57 years, Brenda, and their two children. He is an avid golfer, enjoys camping, and tends to his garden.
