Dr. Heran Gebreyesus

Dr. Heran Winta Gebreyesus is a general ophthalmologist with a special focus on glaucoma care. She diagnoses and treats a wide range of eye conditions and emphasizes early detection, tailored treatment plans, and clear patient education. Her approach blends compassionate communication with evolving medical technology to help protect sight and preserve quality of life.

Originally from the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, Dr. Gebreyesus was selected to serve as chief resident during ophthalmology residency and is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Patients value her thorough explanations and collaborative style when discussing options for medical and surgical glaucoma management and ongoing follow-up. She sees patients at University of Maryland Ophthalmology locations in Baltimore and Columbia and is part of UM Faculty Physicians.

Dr. Gebreyesus completed medical school at Howard University College of Medicine, followed by internship and ophthalmology residency at Howard University Hospital. She then pursued subspecialty training in glaucoma at the University of Colorado Anschutz campus.
