About Me

Dr. Gerard P. Barry is an Associate Professor in ophthalmology and pediatrics at Albany Medical College in Albany, New York. He is a board-certified physician and ophthalmic surgeon who has grown his clinical and educational roles over more than a decade in practice. Dr. Barry manages the busy retinopathy of prematurity service, including screening and treatment, at the Level 4 neonatal intensive care unit at Albany Medical Center. His research has led to over a dozen papers and presentations at national meetings, with a particular focus on retinopathy of prematurity.

Dr. Barry completed a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania, which is consistently ranked among the nation's best children's hospitals. His training focused on the surgical and medical care of children with a wide range of eye disorders, including strabismus (misaligned eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye), blocked tear duct, and retinopathy of prematurity. He also performs strabismus surgery on adult patients.

A native of the Albany area, Dr. Barry feels fortunate to provide compassionate eye care to children and adults with strabismus in his hometown. He attended the University at Buffalo for both undergraduate studies and medical school, where he served as chapter president of the American Medical Association. During his ophthalmology residency at Albany Medical College, he received awards for excellence in research and clinical ability.
