About Me
Dr. Gary C. Brown is a vitreoretinal specialist who serves as Chief Emeritus of the Wills Eye Hospital Retina Service, Attending Surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital, and Professor of Ophthalmology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He has spent decades treating patients with complex vitreoretinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and abnormalities of the optic nerve. Dr. Brown is also an active researcher who has participated in numerous National Institutes of Health and industry clinical trials and has authored more than 700 medical publications and 11 textbooks on these conditions.
A Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Brown has trained over 100 vitreoretinal surgeons since joining the Retina Service at Wills in 1981. He has been recognized by his peers with numerous honors, including the Arnall Patz Medal for retinal vascular research, the Wills Eye Hospital Society Silver Tray Award, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology Lifetime Honor Award. Throughout his career, he has delivered more than 400 lectures nationally and internationally and has served in leadership roles for multiple ophthalmic organizations.
