About Me
Dr. Dina Y. Gewaily is an experienced retinal surgeon who joined Lancaster Retina Specialists after several years in private practice in Philadelphia. She is a native of Long Island, NY, and moved to Rhode Island upon enrolling in Brown University’s highly selective 8-year combined medical program, where she obtained Honors in every pre-clinical course and earned three degrees: a B.A., M.S., and M.D.
Dr. Gewaily completed her ophthalmology residency at the University of Pennsylvania’s prestigious Scheie Eye Institute and was subsequently chosen as the first female surgical retina fellow in the history of that institute. She served on adjunct faculty at Penn’s Scheie Eye Institute as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, where she enjoyed teaching residents and fellows both medical and surgical retina. Her research contributions have been presented on regional, national, and international levels, resulting in numerous peer-reviewed journal publications, and she continues to serve as an investigator on national retina trials.
While Dr. Gewaily specializes in the broad medical and surgical management of diseases of the retina and vitreous, she has a particular interest in the treatment of macular degeneration, retinal vascular disease including advanced diabetic retinopathy, macular hole/pucker, and complex retinal detachments. She was a member of the surgical retina team that developed the first FDA-approved gene therapy in the United States for an inherited disease and has been invited as a peer reviewer for journals such as RETINA and the Cochrane Eye and Vision Group.
