Dr. McGarey earned his medical degree from Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio. He then completed a family practice residency at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, followed by an ophthalmology residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, which he finished in 1997.

In 1997, Dr. McGarey opened his private practice in Flagstaff, Arizona. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and is a fellow of the American Medical Association.
