About Me
Dr. Byron L. Lam is a neuro-ophthalmologist and inherited retinal disease specialist at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. His clinical practice is dedicated to patients with complex neuro-ophthalmological conditions and hereditary retinal disorders. Dr. Lam is also a professor of ophthalmology and holds the Mark J. Daily Chair in Ophthalmology.
As an active clinical scientist, Dr. Lam has led numerous gene therapy clinical trials for conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa, achromatopsia, Stargardt disease, and choroideremia. He has a particular expertise in Leber hereditary optic neuropathy, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. His research integrates clinical care with innovative therapies, including the development of the Visual Lightsensitivity Questionnaire-8 and the Bascom Palmer Light Discomfort Analyzer.
In addition to his clinical and research roles, Dr. Lam serves as the medical director of the neuro-ophthalmology service and clinical research at Bascom Palmer. He is committed to advancing the field through translational projects and has authored a widely used textbook on electrophysiology of vision.
