About Me

Dr. Brian Ballios is a clinician-scientist whose practice and laboratory focus on inherited retinal disease, ocular genetics, and emerging regenerative therapies. He holds appointments at the University Health Network’s Krembil Research Institute and the Donald K. Johnson Eye Institute, where he leads work in translational models of retinal degeneration and first-in-human applications of gene and cell-based therapies. In clinic, he evaluates patients with inherited and acquired retinal disorders, provides state-of-the-art imaging and counseling, and connects eligible patients with clinical trials.

Dr. Ballios completed an MD/PhD at the University of Toronto, followed by FRCSC residency in ophthalmology at the same institution. He pursued subspecialty fellowship training in Inherited Retinal Disease at Massachusetts Eye and Ear/Harvard. With a background in Engineering Chemistry from Queen’s University, he pioneered hydrogel-based delivery systems for retinal cell transplantation and continues to advance therapies aimed at preserving and restoring sight.
