Akintomide (Tommy) Apara, MD, PhD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical care of retinal diseases. He provides comprehensive vitreoretinal care—including evaluation, counseling, and advanced surgical techniques tailored to each patient’s diagnosis and lifestyle. Dr. Apara earned a BS in Biology/Neuroscience at Duke University, then completed combined MD/PhD training at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He finished ophthalmology residency at the University of California San Diego (Shiley Eye Institute) and a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the LSU Eye Center in New Orleans. His academic interests span neuroscience and retinal ganglion cell biology, with peer-reviewed publications and national presentations.
