About Me
Akintomide (Tommy) Apara, MD, PhD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical care of retinal diseases. He provides comprehensive vitreoretinal care—including evaluation, counseling, and advanced surgical techniques tailored to each patient’s diagnosis and lifestyle. Dr. Apara’s approach is grounded in clear explanations and shared decision-making so patients understand their options for preserving and restoring vision.
Dr. Apara earned a BS in Biology/Neuroscience at Duke University, then completed combined MD/PhD training at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He finished ophthalmology residency at the University of California San Diego (Shiley Eye Institute) and a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the LSU Eye Center in New Orleans. His academic interests span neuroscience and retinal ganglion cell biology, with peer-reviewed publications and national presentations. Raised and based in South Florida, he enjoys caring for his community and collaborating closely with referring doctors to streamline care.
