About Me

Dr. Somya Chowdhary is an ophthalmologist at the WVU Eye Institute who specializes in neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, and the diagnosis and treatment of strabismus. She cares for children and adults with complex conditions that affect eye movements, alignment, and the visual pathways connecting the eyes and brain. Dr. Chowdhary completed ophthalmology residency at Kasturba Medical College, where she also earned her medical degree. She went on to advanced fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at UPMC and later completed a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology and inherited retinal diseases at the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. She joined the WVU Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences faculty and the WVU Eye Institute in 2022. She enjoys working closely with families to understand how vision problems affect school, work, and daily activities. Her goal is to provide thoughtful explanations, offer both surgical and non-surgical options when appropriate, and partner with patients over time to protect vision and support comfortable, single vision.
