About Me
Dr. Joseph Schmutz is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery, LASIK, and the management of eye diseases including glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, and refractive error. He provides comprehensive eye care with a focus on building strong patient relationships and offering personalized treatment plans.
Dr. Schmutz completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, where he served as administrative chief resident, and finished an internal medicine internship at the University of Washington/Boise Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine and holds a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from Brigham Young University, where he graduated magna cum laude.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Schmutz is involved in volunteer work, including monthly eye clinics for the homeless and medical mission trips to Ecuador and Mexico. He is fluent in Spanish and enjoys running, playing the piano, and camping with his family.
