About Me
Dr. Joann Hensel is a board-certified ophthalmologist who has been practicing in Southeast Texas since 1986. She is a native of Beaumont and was motivated to pursue ophthalmology after seeing family members affected by age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Hensel takes a patient-centered approach, believing that well-informed patients can better participate in their own care. She treats a wide range of eye conditions with a focus on conditions such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease.
After completing her internship and residency at Scott & White Hospital, where she served as chief resident, Dr. Hensel practiced privately for two years before volunteering her surgical skills at Kasturba Medical School in Manipal, India. There, she participated in eye camps that provided sight-restoring surgery to hundreds of people in remote areas. She returned to Beaumont in 1986 and joined Eye Centers of Southeast Texas at the College Street location, where she continues to provide comprehensive medical and surgical eye care alongside her colleagues.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Hensel is an active member of several medical associations and has served on committees at her church. She enjoys traveling and cheering for the University of Texas Longhorns in her free time.
