About Me

Dr. James C. Lai is a retina specialist at the Eye Surgery Center of Hawaii. He completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Michigan, graduating with top honors. His ophthalmology residency and chief residency were at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins, followed by a vitreoretinal fellowship at Duke University Eye Center. He also completed a research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health and Howard Hughes Medical Institutes.

Dr. Lai specializes in the medical and surgical management of retinal conditions, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, and macular holes. He is actively involved in clinical trials for new treatments of retinal diseases. He holds a clinical assistant professor appointment at the University of Hawaii Medical School and is a member of several professional societies, including the American Society of Retinal Specialists.

Dr. Lai has received numerous awards, including the Heed Fellowship, Knapp Ophthalmic Foundation Award, and Ronald G. Michels Foundation Fellowship. He has been recognized as a "Best Doctor in America" and "Best Doctor in Honolulu" for his expertise in retinal care.
