About Me
Dr. Laryssa Huryn is a board-certified ophthalmologist and ophthalmic genetics specialist at the National Eye Institute (NEI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She earned her medical degree from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, where she received the Harry E. and Loretta A. Jordan Award for excellence in ophthalmology. Dr. Huryn completed her ophthalmology residency at Upstate University in New York and then pursued two fellowships: one in pediatric ophthalmology at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and a second in ophthalmic genetics at the NEI.
Dr. Huryn's clinical expertise focuses on inherited eye conditions, neurodegenerative disorders, and rare genetic diseases that affect vision. She leads the Natural History of Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 7 Study and participates in retinal degeneration research and collaborative projects across the NIH. As the director of the Ophthalmic Genetics Clinical Fellowship at the NEI, she trains the next generation of specialists. Dr. Huryn is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters, contributing to advancements in genetic eye disease care.
